Women: Know your tyres — and stay safe
The programme Women With Drive aims to empower women drivers in car care, discovers SUZANNA PILLAY
MOST car owners ignore their tyres until they have a flat in the middle of nowhere. “It is a little known fact that 80 per cent of tyre problems are caused by under-inflation. Only 20 per cent are due to mechanical problems,” says Adenan Masul, director and store manager of Nusajaza Tyre Centre, a Goodyear Autocare Centre in Shah Alam. So, maintaining correct tyre pressure can help cars be more fuel efficient and tyres also last longer. “Tyres are important for braking, cornering and gripping the road surface. Under-inflated tyres are dangerous because there is flexing in the tyre, allowing inner heat to build up, thus increasing the their rolling resistance. This can lead to tyre failure.” Adenan says the amount of pressure a tyre needs depends on the make of the vehicle. “Follow the tyre pressure recommended in your vehicle handbook.” This year, in collaboration with the Automotive Association Malaysia, Goodyear will be launching its global programme called Women With Drive, which offers practical driving knowledge and training to women drivers to empower them in car care. Women drivers can learn more about tyre care and other maintenance tips at special workshops at various participating Goodyear car care centres. For details on the workshops which start next month, log on to www.goodyear.com.my. Meanwhile, iPhone users can access The Goodyear Highway Helper, which can be downloaded free from App Store. It provides maintenance tips for car care.
